Heart of the Home

In 2000, Patti and Rick Herring hired Excel to build a 2,000 square foot, three-story addition to their home. This past year they reached out again, this time to rework their kitchen, the heart of their home. Kitchens are frequently referred to as “the heart of the home” because they are a natural gathering spot. The Herrings have now lived in their home for 25 years and have four grown children. They love to host family and friends, and invariably, everyone congregates in the kitchen. “At every party, we just had too many people in the kitchen!” explained Rick. In addition to wanting more space in the kitchen, the adjacent living room with a wood burning fireplace was rarely used, and a wall separated the spaces. Working with design team member Brian Miller at Excel, the Herrings decided to knock down the wall and expand the kitchen space. In preparation for the work Excel would do, the Herrings also had their wood-burning fireplace converted to a much more efficient and easy-to-use gas fireplace. With the dividing wall removed, the space opened up, and they now find themselves using the fireplace more than ever!

Wall removed, kitchen expanded.

A former pantry was removed as part of the remodel, but new cabinetry, granite counters, and a space-saving and convenient microwave drawer have given them plenty of storage and workspace. The Herrings went into the project knowing that they wanted a farmer’s sink and a double-oven, but they trusted Brian’s suggestions on the contrasting island color and they love the new wallpaper in the former living room that adds complimentary style to the space and ties everything together.

Heart of the home, now even larger!

They were equally impressed with the quality of service and level of communication throughout the project. As Patti explained, “The first day Excel came here, they gave us a date they would be finished – and they actually finished the night before that date. They truly met and exceeded every expectation.” Happy clients warm our hearts! See more pictures of this kitchen; and if you’re ready for a change in your home, contact us to discuss your ideas.
